Nyamira County is county 046 of Kenya’s 47 counties, in the highlands of the former Nyanza Province. Its capital is Nyamira town, and the 2019 census counted 605,576 residents on 912.5 km². The county was carved out of the old Kisii District in 1989 and is still known locally as North Kisii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The county lies between roughly 1,250 and 2,100 metres above sea level on the eastern shoulder of the Gusii Highlands. The Manga escarpment runs across the north, and streams here feed both the Sondu and Gucha river systems.<\/p>\n

    Rain falls in two seasons and totals 1,200 to 2,000 mm a year. The uplands stay cool and misty, which suits tea. Daytime temperatures sit between 16°C and 24°C for most of the year.<\/p>\n

    Nyamira borders Kisii County<\/a> to the west and south-west, and Homa Bay County<\/a> to the north-west. Kisumu County<\/a> lies to the north, Kericho County<\/a> to the north-east and Bomet County<\/a> to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Demographics<\/h2>\n

    The 2019 census counted 605,576 people: 290,907 men, 314,656 women and 13 intersex residents. Density averages about 664 people per km².<\/p>\n

    Just 47,036 residents were classed as urban, so more than nine in ten live in rural settlements. Ekegusii is the household language across the county, with Swahili and English used in schools and offices.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Tea is the leading cash crop, delivered to smallholder factories at Nyansiongo, Kiabonyoru, Sanganyi and Tombe. Bananas, coffee, maize, beans and finger millet fill the rest of the farm calendar, and most households keep a dairy cow or two.<\/p>\n

    Keroka is the busiest market town, sitting on the boundary with Kisii and drawing traders from both counties. Nyamira town holds the county offices and the main livestock and produce market. Ekerenyo, Magwagwa, Ikonge and Nyansiongo run the other weekly markets.<\/p>\n

    Soapstone quarrying, common in neighbouring Kisii, does not extend into Nyamira. Off-farm income here comes mainly from teaching, trade and remittances from Nairobi and Kisumu.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The A1 highway passes just west of the county through Kisii town. From Kisii, the Kisii–Sotik road runs east through Keroka, and a branch turns north to Nyamira town, about 25 km from Kisii.<\/p>\n

    Kisumu is roughly 130 km away and has the nearest airport with scheduled flights. Nairobi is about 320 km by road through Sotik, Kericho and Nakuru.<\/p>\n
