Mount Marsabit reaches about 1,865 metres and carries cloud forest and crater lakes, including Lake Paradise. Mount Kulal rises to 2,235 metres above the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. The Chalbi Desert, a dry saline pan, fills the county’s centre and floods briefly after heavy rain.

Lake Turkana forms the western boundary. Its eastern shore holds Loiyangalani, Ileret and the El Molo settlements. Temperatures usually run between 15°C and 26°C, and rainfall ranges from about 200 millimetres on the desert floor to 1,000 millimetres on the mountain. Sibiloi National Park, on the north-eastern lakeshore, protects the Koobi Fora fossil beds.

Marsabit borders Ethiopia to the north and Wajir County to the east. Turkana County lies west across Lake Turkana, with Samburu County and Isiolo County to the south.

Demographics

The 2019 census counted 459,785 people, up from 291,166 in 2009. Average density is about seven people per square kilometre, the thinnest in Kenya after Turkana. Settlement clusters tightly around mountains, wells and the A2 highway.

The Borana and Gabra are the largest communities, with Rendille, Samburu, Burji, Turkana, Dassanach, Konso and Somali residents. The small El Molo community lives on the lakeshore near Loiyangalani. Borana, Gabra and Rendille are widely spoken alongside Swahili and English. Islam and Christianity are both common.

Economy and Local Life

Pastoralism carries the county economy. Camels, cattle, goats and sheep are herded across long seasonal circuits between the Chalbi, the mountain slopes and the lakeshore. Livestock and hides move south by lorry and across the border at Moyale.

Rain-fed and irrigated farming is limited to the mountain zones around Marsabit town and Moyale, where maize, beans, teff, wheat and vegetables grow. Fishing supports lakeside households at Loiyangalani, El Molo Bay and Ileret. Moyale’s cross-border trade with Ethiopia is the largest single source of cash. The Lake Turkana Wind Power farm at Sarima, near Loiyangalani, is the largest wind installation in Africa. Tourism draws visitors to Marsabit National Park, Sibiloi and the Lake Turkana Cultural Festival.

Getting There

The A2 highway runs the length of the county, tarmacked from Isiolo through Marsabit town to the Moyale border post. Marsabit town is roughly 530 kilometres north of Nairobi and about 250 kilometres south of Moyale. The road forms part of the LAPSSET corridor linking Kenya and Ethiopia.

Roads west to North Horr, Kalacha, Loiyangalani and Ileret are earth and gravel. Four-wheel drive and fuel reserves are needed, and stretches of the Chalbi are impassable when wet. Airstrips serve Marsabit, Moyale, Loiyangalani, North Horr and Sibiloi. Buses run daily between Nairobi, Isiolo, Marsabit and Moyale.

FAQ

What is the capital of Marsabit County?

Marsabit town is the county capital, with 36,289 residents in 2019.
