    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The municipality occupies the middle Ankobra basin in the north-west of the region, a belt of moist forest broken by cocoa farms and river flats. Asankragwa stands on the road that runs north-west from Tarkwa towards Enchi, which makes it the collecting point for a wide rural hinterland. Neighbouring districts include Wassa Amenfi Central<\/a> to the east and Prestea-Huni Valley<\/a> to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa buying, timber and alluvial gold drive the local economy, with oil palm, plantain and cassava grown for food and for sale. Asankragwa’s market draws traders from the surrounding villages and from Tarkwa. Many smaller settlements listed below began as farming hamlets attached to a single family holding, which is why so many names end in -krom or -kurom.<\/p>\n

    Asankragwa functions as the district’s transport hub as well as its market, with lorries loading cocoa, plantain and timber for Tarkwa and Takoradi. Palm oil pressing, sawmilling and gari processing employ people between farm seasons. Alluvial gold winning along the Ankobra and its streams pulls in migrant labour and has become the main pressure on farmland and water quality in the municipality.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Asankragwa lies roughly 100 km north-west of Takoradi by road through Tarkwa. Buses and trotros run daily from Tarkwa and Takoradi, and the same road continues north-west into the Western North Region.<\/p>\n
