Sekondi-Takoradi is the metropolitan district and regional capital of the Western Region of Ghana, a twin city on the Gulf of Guinea. Its seat is Sekondi. The metropolis recorded a population of 245,382 at the 2021 census, against 326,931 in 2010 for a wider area, before new municipalities were carved out of the built-up district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The metropolis sits on a rocky stretch of the Western Region coast, with Sekondi on the eastern headland and Takoradi about 10 km west around the bay. The two towns grew together along the harbour road, and suburbs such as Effia, Kwesimintsim, Kojokrom and Apremdo now fill the ground between and behind them. Shama<\/a> lies to the east and Ahanta West<\/a> to the west, with Wassa East<\/a> inland.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Takoradi harbour, opened in 1928 as Ghana’s first deep-water port, handles bauxite, manganese, timber, cocoa and containers, and it is the shore base for the offshore oil and gas industry. Railway workshops, fish landing at Sekondi, market trading at Takoradi market circle and a wide service sector employ the rest of the city. Fishing communities still work the beaches at Sekondi and Ngyeresia.<\/p>\n

    Since commercial oil production began offshore in 2010, Takoradi has served as the logistics base for the industry, which added supply-boat traffic, fabrication yards and rented housing to an economy already built on the port and the railway. Growth has pushed the built-up area outward through Apremdo, Kwesimintsim and Kojokrom, and the suburbs listed below are now effectively one continuous city.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Takoradi is about 220 km west of Accra on the N1 coastal highway, a drive of four to five hours, and buses run through the day. Takoradi airport carries scheduled flights from Accra, and the railway links the city with Tarkwa. City taxis and trotros connect Sekondi, Takoradi and the suburbs.<\/p>\n
