    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Shama occupies the eastern end of the Western Region shoreline, where the Pra reaches the sea and forms the boundary with the Central Region. Fort San Sebastian, built at Shama in the sixteenth century, stands above the estuary. The land behind the coast is flat and sandy, turning to farm bush inland. The district lies east of Sekondi-Takoradi<\/a> and south of Wassa East<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Canoe fishing and fish smoking anchor the coastal towns at Shama, Abuesi and Aboadze, and the catch is traded to Takoradi and inland. The thermal power station at Aboadze supplies electricity to the national grid and brings service employment. Farming inland runs to cassava, maize, oil palm and vegetables, and salt winning works the lagoon margins.<\/p>\n

    Shama’s fishing towns land and smoke fish for markets as far inland as Kumasi, and the trade is organised around canoe owners, crews and the women who buy at the beach. Boatbuilding and net repair support it. The estuary also carries sand winning and dry-season vegetable growing on the flood plain, while the power station and the Inchaban works are the largest non-fishing employers.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Shama is about 20 km east of Takoradi, just off the coastal highway towards Cape Coast; the turning is at Inchaban. Trotros from Takoradi and Sekondi run through the day, and the same highway carries traffic from Accra.<\/p>\n
