    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The municipality lies inland in the south of the region, in the valley of the Bonsa River and on the forested ridges either side of it. Tarkwa stands on the railway that links Takoradi harbour with Kumasi, and Nsuta, just outside the town, sits on the manganese deposit. Neighbouring districts include Prestea-Huni Valley<\/a> to the north-west, Mpohor<\/a> to the east and Ahanta West<\/a> to the south.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Large-scale gold mining, manganese extraction and the haulage and workshops that serve them dominate the local economy, alongside widespread small-scale winning. The University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa trains engineers for the industry and brings a student population to the town. Farming continues around the concessions, chiefly cocoa, oil palm, plantain and cassava, and Tarkwa’s market is the largest in the mining belt.<\/p>\n

    Tarkwa’s population more than doubled between the 2010 and 2021 censuses, and the town has grown along the roads out towards Nsuaem and Bonsa. Housing, food selling, transport and repair work follow the mine payroll. Small-scale winning employs many more people than the large mines do, and its effect on rivers and farmland is a standing subject at the municipal assembly.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Tarkwa is roughly 60 km inland from Takoradi on a tarred road, with regular buses and trotros. The road continues north through Bogoso and Prestea, and freight moves on the Takoradi-Tarkwa-Kumasi railway.<\/p>\n
