    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Ho West covers hill country and farmland north-west of Ho, in the central Volta Region. The Avatime and Amedzofe hills rise steeply here; Amedzofe, listed below, is one of the highest inhabited places in Ghana and looks out over the plain from about 700 m. Streams cut through the ranges and feed the Volta basin to the west. It adjoins Ho<\/a> to the east, Afadzato South<\/a> to the north and South Dayi<\/a> to the west.<\/p>\n

    The district splits into two settings. Along the Ho\u2013Kpeve road the land is open farmland at 100 to 200 m, with large roadside villages. Behind it the escarpment climbs sharply to the Avatime and Amedzofe ridges, where villages sit in saddles between peaks and the air is noticeably cooler. Mount Gemi stands above Amedzofe, and footpaths off the ridge drop to waterfalls in the forest below.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Hill farms produce cassava, maize, cocoyam, plantain and vegetables, with rice and yam on the lower ground. Palm oil processing and small-scale trading add income. The hill towns draw walkers and weekend visitors to the escarpment paths and waterfalls around Amedzofe and Biakpa, and guesthouses and guides work from those villages. Dzolokpuita and the roadside towns on the Ho\u2013Kpeve route hold the busiest markets.<\/p>\n

    Several distinct language communities live in the district, including Avatime, Tafi and Nyangbo speakers alongside Ewe, and each keeps its own traditional area and annual festival. Farming remains the common occupation, but proximity to Ho means many households also hold jobs in the regional capital and commute. Sand winning, block making and transport work serve the building trade spreading out from Ho.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Dzolokpuita sits on the Ho\u2013Kpeve road, about 20 km from Ho. Amedzofe and the hill villages are reached by a branch road that climbs from Vane and Fume. From Accra, drive to Kpeve through Akosombo, then turn towards Ho.<\/p>\n
