    Geography<\/h2>\n

    South Tongu lies on the lower Volta, where the river runs its last stretch towards the sea. Sogakope stands at the bridge that carries the Accra–Aflao highway across the river, and much of the district is flat floodplain and grassland with creeks and seasonal ponds. Soils near the river are fertile and worked hard.<\/p>\n

    Sogakope and the villages along the bank sit within a few kilometres of the water, and the country downstream turns to marsh and lagoon before the river reaches the sea. The highway and the river between them account for most movement in and out of the district.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Central Tongu<\/a> and North Tongu<\/a> upstream, and Akatsi South<\/a> to the east.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Fishing and farming carry the district. The Volta supplies tilapia and other freshwater fish, and cage aquaculture operates on stretches of the river. Farmers grow cassava, maize, rice, sugarcane, pepper and vegetables, and keep cattle on the grassland.<\/p>\n

    Sogakope’s position on the highway makes it a stopping point for traffic between Accra and the border, which supports hotels, eating places and roadside trade. The riverside also draws weekend visitors from Accra.<\/p>\n

    Ewe is spoken throughout the district, with English used in schools and offices. The year is split between the farming calendar and the river: planting follows the March rains, and fishing picks up as water levels fall. Sogakope’s market and its position on the highway keep the town busy through the week.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Sogakope is about 100 kilometres from Accra on the Aflao highway, a drive of roughly ninety minutes. Every bus running between Accra and Aflao passes through it. Roads north from the town follow the river towards Adidome and Battor.<\/p>\n
