The country is a mix of low hills and open farmland, drier than the Ho highlands and crossed by seasonal streams. Several communities sit within a few kilometres of the border, and cross-border family and market ties are ordinary daily life here.

Kpetoe stands on the road running east from Ho towards the frontier, and the district’s villages string out along that road and the feeder tracks off it. Rain falls in two seasons, and the farming year waits on the first of them.

The district borders Ho Municipal to the west and Akatsi North to the south.

Economy and Local Life

Kpetoe is known across Ghana for kente weaving, and the Agotime kente festival held there each year draws visitors and buyers. Weaving runs alongside farming rather than replacing it: maize, cassava, yam, groundnuts and vegetables are the staples, with poultry and small livestock in most compounds.

Trade across the Togo border is a steady income source, and the district’s markets handle goods and farm produce moving in both directions.

Ewe is spoken across the district, and many households also use Ga-Dangme or French through contact with Togo. Weaving is taught young, and looms stand in compounds beside the farm plots. Market days, church services and weekend funerals organise the week, and the annual kente festival is the point when people living away return home.

Getting There

Kpetoe lies about 20 kilometres east of Ho on the road towards the Togo border, a drive of well under an hour. Shared taxis run between Ho and Kpetoe through the day. From Accra, travel to Ho first and continue east.

FAQ

What is the capital of Agotime Ziope?

The district capital is Kpetoe.

Which region is Agotime Ziope in?

Agotime Ziope is in the Volta Region of Ghana, in the south-east of the country.

What is the population of Agotime Ziope?

Agotime Ziope had a population of 39,553 at the 2021 census, compared with 28,013 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed for Agotime Ziope?

This page lists 50 towns and communities in the district.

Agotime Ziope is a district in the Volta Region of Ghana.
