Low hills stand behind the shoreline, and the drowned valleys of Lake Volta form the western boundary; the land falls from the ridge towns down to the water. Anfoega, Vakpo, Botoku and Wusuta are the main settlement clusters. It borders Kpando to the south and Hohoe and Afadzato South to the east.

Lake Volta is the defining feature. The lake was formed when the Akosombo Dam closed in the 1960s and flooded the valley, which pushed several riverside communities uphill to their present sites; Wusuta and the Dzigbe settlements below Anfoega still sit close to the water. Inlets and creeks break up the shoreline, so travel between lakeside villages is often quicker by canoe than by road.

Economy and Local Life

Households combine farming with lake fishing. Cassava, maize, yam and vegetables are grown on the slopes, and canoe crews fish the Volta from the landing beaches. Fish is smoked and sold on to traders from Kpando and Ho. Palm oil, akpeteshie distilling and petty trade round out incomes, and the roadside towns hold periodic markets.

Population has held roughly flat between the two censuses, at just under 40,000, and out-migration to Accra and Ho explains much of that. Schools, clinics and a hospital at Anfoega give the district capital more weight than its size suggests. Land is worked in small family plots, and land shortage on the better slopes pushes younger farmers towards the lake shore.

Getting There

Anfoega lies off the Kpando–Hohoe road; junction vehicles run from Kpando, about 20 km to the south. From Accra, the usual route is through Akosombo and Kpeve, then north along the lake through Kpando.

FAQ

What is the capital of North Dayi?

Anfoega is the district capital of North Dayi.

Which region is North Dayi in?

North Dayi is in the Volta Region of Ghana.

What is the population of North Dayi?

North Dayi had a population of 39,268 at the 2021 census.
