    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Sissala East covers the north-eastern corner of the Upper West Region. Burkina Faso lies
    \nto the north and the Upper East Region to the east; the Sissili and Kulpawn rivers rise in and around
    \nthe district and drain south-east. The Gbele Resource Reserve, the region’s main protected area, lies
    \non its western side. Settlement is dispersed across broad farmland, and the district is Sisaala
    \ncountry. Sissala West<\/a> adjoins it to the west and
    \n    Wa East<\/a> to the south-west.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Sissala East is one of the strongest grain-producing districts in northern Ghana. Maize
    \nis the leading crop, alongside sorghum, millet, groundnuts, cowpea, soya, yam and cotton, and large
    \nvolumes move out through traders at Tumu. Cattle, goats, sheep and guinea fowl are kept widely. Shea
    \nnut picking and butter processing are important to women’s income. Tumu carries the municipal
    \nadministration, a hospital, secondary schools and the district’s biggest market.<\/p>\n

    Sisaala is the district’s language, with Hausa and Moore common in the Tumu market and among cross-border traders. Land is held under Sisaala custom, and the district has taken in farming settlers from more crowded parts of the north, drawn by land availability. Tumu’s grain trade sets the pace of the local year: buying peaks after the November harvest.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Tumu is reached from Wa on the road east through Han, and from the Upper East Region on
    \nthe road west from Navrongo. Both routes carry daily minibuses and shared taxis. Roads into outlying
    \nfarming villages are unpaved and slow during the July-to-September rains.<\/p>\n
