    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Sissala West lies in the north of the Upper West Region, along the boundary with Burkina
    \nFaso. Gwollu, the capital, sits north-west of Tumu near the border. The country is open Sudan savanna
    \nwith seasonal streams draining towards the Kulpawn; part of the Gbele Resource Reserve lies on the
    \ndistrict’s eastern side. Jeffisi and Kupulima are the other main settlements.
    \nSissala East<\/a> adjoins the district to the east,
    \n    Wa East<\/a> to the south and
    \n    Daffiama Bussie Issa<\/a> to the south-west.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming supports nearly every household: maize, sorghum, millet, groundnuts, cowpea,
    \nsoya, yam and cotton in the single rainy season, with cattle, goats, sheep and guinea fowl kept
    \nalongside. Shea nut collection and butter processing bring cash after harvest. Gwollu and Jeffisi hold
    \nthe district’s markets, and the defence wall at Gwollu draws a modest stream of visitors. Cross-border
    \nmovement with Burkina Faso adds trade to the northern villages.<\/p>\n

    Sisaala is the language of the district, with Dagaare spoken towards the western boundary and Moore heard at the border villages. Land is held under family custom and farmed from dispersed compounds. The district is remote even by regional standards, and seasonal work in southern Ghana is a normal part of the household year for young men.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Gwollu is reached from Wa by taking the eastern road through Han to Tumu, then turning
    \nnorth-west; the final stretch is unpaved. Vehicles run from Wa and from Tumu, less frequently in the
    \nrainy season when the feeder roads soften.<\/p>\n
