The land is flat Guinea savanna, with the Sissili River and its tributaries draining south into the Tono reservoir. Soils are sandy and the single rainy season lasts from May to October.

The district was carved out of the older Kassena Nankana district and borders Kassena Nankana to the south and east, with North Builsa to the south-west. Kasem is the main language, with Nankam spoken in eastern communities such as Nakolo and Navio.

Economy and Local Life

Households grow millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, maize and rice in the rains, and irrigate tomatoes, onions and pepper in the dry season near dams and the Tono command area. Livestock, guinea fowl and donkeys are kept widely, and cross-border trade with Burkina Faso is a steady source of cash at Paga, Chiana and Kayoro.

The district is the best known visitor destination in the region. Paga has crocodile ponds at Paga and Kajelo and a preserved slave camp at Pikworo, while Sirigu is recognised for its painted compound walls and pottery, produced by a women’s craft association. Basket weaving and shea butter processing are common household trades.

Getting There

Paga sits at the end of the tarred N10 north of Bolgatanga, about 45 km from the regional capital and 15 km beyond Navrongo. It is Ghana’s main road entry point from Burkina Faso, so buses and freight run through it daily. Shared taxis link Navrongo to Paga, Chiana, Sirigu and Kayoro; feeder roads to smaller communities are laterite.

FAQ

What is the capital of Kassena Nankana West?

The district capital is Paga.

Which region is Kassena Nankana West in?

Kassena Nankana West is in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Kassena Nankana West?

The 2021 census recorded 90,735 people.
