The Red Volta runs along its eastern side, and seasonal streams cut across the district towards the White Volta system. Rain falls in one season from May to October, and the dry months bring harmattan dust from the Sahel. Communities are strung along the Bolgatanga–Nangodi road as dispersed compounds, which is why so many entries below carry the Nangodi and Sekoti prefixes.

The district borders Talensi, from which it was separated, to the south and west, with Bolgatanga to the west and Bawku West to the north-east. Nabt is the main language, closely related to Gurune.

Economy and Local Life

Farming supports most households: millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, maize and rice in the rains, with dry-season gardening near dams and along the river valleys. Cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are kept in almost every compound.

Nangodi has a long history of gold working, and small-scale mining continues around the old reef workings, drawing labour from outside the district. Basket weaving, smock weaving, pito brewing and shea butter processing supplement farm income, and Nangodi and Pelungu hold the main markets.

Getting There

Nangodi is roughly 30 km east of Bolgatanga on a tarred road through Zuarungu. Long-distance buses from Accra, Kumasi and Tamale terminate at Bolgatanga, where shared taxis and minibuses run to Nangodi, Pelungu and Sekoti. Feeder roads to the Red Volta communities are laterite and can be cut by streams in the rains.

FAQ

What is the capital of Nabdam?

The district capital is Nangodi.

Which region is Nabdam in?

Nabdam is in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Nabdam?

The 2021 census recorded 51,861 people.
