    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Bongo occupies the northern edge of the Upper East Region, along the border with Burkina Faso. Granite hills and boulder fields run through the district, and the Bongo rock outcrops are among the most prominent landforms in the region. Soils are shallow and stony, and population density is high, so farm plots are small and holdings fragmented. The Vea reservoir on its southern side supplies irrigation water.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Bolgatanga<\/a> to the south, Bawku West<\/a> to the east and Talensi<\/a> to the south-east. Gurune is the main language.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Households farm millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, bambara beans and maize in the single rainy season, with yields limited by thin soils and erratic rain. Dry-season gardening under the Vea scheme and around small dams produces tomatoes, onions, pepper and leafy vegetables. Livestock and guinea fowl are the main savings.<\/p>\n

    Stone quarrying is a widespread dry-season occupation, with granite broken by hand for the building trade. Basket weaving, pottery, smock weaving and shea processing add income, and the district has a long record of seasonal migration to southern Ghana. Bongo, Namoo and Zorko hold the main markets, and the Bongo market day draws sellers from communities on both sides of the Burkina Faso border.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Bongo is about 15 km north of Bolgatanga on a tarred road, a 20-minute run by shared taxi. Travellers from Accra, Kumasi or Tamale reach Bolgatanga by bus and continue from the Bongo station there. A road runs north from Bongo to the Burkina Faso border; feeder roads to Namoo, Vea and Beo are laterite.<\/p>\n
