The Red Volta crosses the district, and much of the western edge falls within the sparsely settled Red Volta valley. The land is flat Sudan savanna with a single rainy season from May to October.

The district borders Binduri and Bawku to the east, and lies north-east of Bolgatanga and east of Bongo. Kusaal is the main language, with Gurune spoken in western communities.

Economy and Local Life

Farming and livestock rearing dominate. Millet, sorghum, maize, rice, groundnuts, cowpea and soya are grown in the rains; dry-season gardens along the White Volta and around dams produce onions, tomatoes and pepper. Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and guinea fowl are kept in most compounds and traded at Zebilla and Binaba markets.

Zebilla and Binaba are the main market towns, with weekly markets that pull in traders from across the district and from Burkina Faso. Shea nut collection, dawadawa processing, basket weaving and pito brewing give women independent income, and seasonal migration south after harvest is common.

Getting There

Zebilla lies about 55 km east of Bolgatanga and 35 km west of Bawku on the tarred Bolgatanga–Bawku road, so through traffic passes the town all day. Buses from Accra, Kumasi and Tamale reach Bolgatanga, where minibuses and shared taxis continue east. Feeder roads to Binaba, Gbantongo and the Red Volta communities are laterite and slow after rain.

FAQ

What is the capital of Bawku West?

The district capital is Zebilla.

Which region is Bawku West in?

Bawku West is in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Bawku West?

The 2021 census recorded 144,189 people.
