    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Bolgatanga sits near the centre of the Upper East Region, on flat to gently undulating savanna at the northern edge of the White Volta basin. Granite outcrops rise east and south of the town, and the Vea reservoir lies a short distance to the north-east. Rain falls in a single season from May to October, and daytime temperatures climb sharply in March and April.<\/p>\n

    The municipality borders Bongo<\/a> to the north, Talensi<\/a> to the south-east and Kassena Nankana<\/a> to the west. Gurune, also called Frafra, is the main language, with Hausa and English used in trade and offices.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    As the regional capital, Bolgatanga runs on public administration, education, health services, banking and transport alongside farming. Its central market is the best known in the region and the main outlet for the woven straw baskets that carry the town’s name, made from elephant grass and exported through Accra.<\/p>\n

    Rural communities in the municipality grow millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and rice in the rains, and irrigate tomatoes, onions and leafy vegetables from the Vea scheme in the dry season. Leatherwork, smithing, pottery and shea butter processing are established crafts, and livestock and guinea fowl are kept widely. Zuarungu and Sumbrungu hold their own markets on the traditional three-day cycle.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Bolgatanga lies about 160 km north of Tamale and roughly 800 km from Accra on the N10 trunk road. Long-distance buses from Accra and Kumasi run daily, most travelling overnight. From the town, tarred roads lead north to Navrongo and the Paga border, east to Zebilla and Bawku, and south to Tamale, with shared taxis serving Zuarungu, Sherigu and other outlying communities.<\/p>\n
