The land is open, with scattered shea and dawadawa trees and long grass that is burned off in the dry season. Settlements are large dispersed compounds rather than tight villages, and section names such as Wiaga-Yisobsa, Kadema and Chuchiliga cover wide areas.

The district borders Builsa South to the south and Kassena Nankana West to the north-east, with Kassena Nankana further east. Buli is the main language.

Economy and Local Life

Almost every household farms. Millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea and increasingly rice are the staples, grown in a single rainy season between May and October. Cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are central to the economy and to marriage and funeral customs. Dry-season work turns to gardening in river-bottom land, weaving and charcoal, and many young people migrate south for the cocoa and construction seasons.

Fisa, Chuchiliga and Kadema hold smaller markets on the three-day cycle used across the district. Sandema is the market and administrative town, home to the Builsa paramountcy and to schools that draw pupils from across the district. The annual Feok festival at Sandema marks the harvest and commemorates the Builsa resistance to slave raiding in the nineteenth century.

Getting There

Sandema sits about 60 km west of Bolgatanga. The usual route runs Bolgatanga–Navrongo–Chuchiliga–Sandema on tarred and graded road. From Tamale, travellers either come north through Bolgatanga or use the Fumbisi road from the south. Shared taxis and minibuses serve Sandema daily; feeder roads to Kadema, Wiaga and Chuchiliga are laterite.

FAQ

What is the capital of North Builsa?

The district capital is Sandema.

Which region is North Builsa in?

North Builsa is in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

What is the population of North Builsa?

The 2021 census recorded 56,571 people.
