    Geography<\/h2>\n

    North Gonja lies in the north-east of the Savannah Region, along the White Volta. Daboya stands on the river bank, and a ferry crossing links the town to the Northern Region side. The land is flat guinea savanna, seasonally flooded near the river, with shea and dawadawa trees on the higher ground. The district borders West Gonja<\/a> and Central Gonja<\/a>, and Mankarigu is the main settlement in its northern half.<\/p>\n

    One rainy season, roughly May to October, is followed by a long dry period. The White Volta floods its margins each year, and the recession leaves damp ground that is farmed as the water falls. Away from the river the country is open savanna grazed by cattle. Settlement is dispersed, with Daboya and Mankarigu the main centres.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Households farm yam, maize, sorghum, millet, rice, groundnut and cowpea, and keep cattle, sheep and goats. Riverside communities fish the White Volta and grow dry-season vegetables on the floodplain. Daboya is known for two long-standing crafts: hand-woven and indigo-dyed cloth, and salt won from the brine springs near the river. Both are sold well beyond the district. Daboya and Mankarigu hold the main markets. Gonja is the dominant language.<\/p>\n

    Daboya’s weaving and dyeing trade is the district’s best-known craft, worked in family compounds and sold through the market and to traders from Tamale. Salt production from the brine springs runs in the dry season. Farming still occupies most households, and cattle are both wealth and working capital. The district assembly is seated at Daboya.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Daboya is reached from Tamale by road through Yapei or via the Tolon side and the White Volta ferry crossing. Mankarigu is served from the Walewale road in the north. Most district roads are earth surfaced and the river crossing can be slow in the flood season.<\/p>\n
