    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Central Gonja lies in the east of the Savannah Region, where the Black and White Volta meet to form the Volta Lake. Buipe stands at the head of the lake and is Ghana’s main inland port. The country is flat guinea savanna, with grassland, shea and dawadawa trees and gallery forest along the rivers. The district borders East Gonja<\/a> across the lake and West Gonja<\/a> to the west; the Fufulso junction on its northern side carries traffic towards Damongo.<\/p>\n

    Rain falls in one season, roughly May to October, and the harmattan dominates the dry months. Floodplains along the two Volta arms are wide and seasonally inundated, which limits building but supports dry-season farming and grazing. Buipe and Mpaha are the largest settlements; the rest of the district is a scatter of farming villages and fishing camps.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming, fishing and haulage sustain the district. Yam, maize, cassava, groundnut, rice and cowpea are grown, and shea nuts are gathered and processed for butter. Fishing crews work the lake around Buipe and Mpaha. Buipe port handles bulk cargo moved by barge on the Volta, and cement and clinker traffic supports transport work at the quay and along the Tamale-Kumasi highway. Buipe and Mpaha hold the main markets. Gonja is the dominant language.<\/p>\n

    The port and the highway make Central Gonja unusually connected for a savanna district. Drivers, loaders, mechanics and food sellers all work off that traffic. Away from the road, life follows the single farming season: clearing before the rains, planting from May, harvest from September. Cattle herds move to the floodplain grazing as the water drops. The assembly is seated at Buipe.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The Tamale-Kumasi highway runs through the district and crosses the Volta at Buipe bridge, so Central Gonja is the easiest Savannah district to reach. Buipe is a straightforward drive south of Tamale. The Fufulso-Sawla road branches west from the highway towards Damongo and Bole.<\/p>\n
