    Geography<\/h2>\n

    West Gonja lies in the centre of the Savannah Region and holds most of Mole National Park, Ghana’s largest protected area. The land is flat to gently rolling guinea savanna, with the park’s escarpment overlooking waterholes that draw elephant, antelope and buffalo in the dry season. Larabanga, on the park road, has one of the oldest mosques in West Africa. The district borders Central Gonja<\/a> to the east and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba<\/a> to the west.<\/p>\n

    Rain falls in one season, roughly May to October, and the dry months bring harmattan and bush fires. Much of the district’s land area is inside Mole National Park, so farming and settlement concentrate along the Fufulso-Sawla road and the tracks running off it. Damongo has grown since it became the regional capital.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming supplies yam, maize, sorghum, millet, rice, groundnut and cowpea, and cattle, sheep and goats are kept across the district. Shea nut gathering and butter making are steady sources of income. Tourism matters here more than in neighbouring districts: Mole National Park and the Larabanga mosque bring visitors who use guides, lodges and transport. Damongo’s market serves the district and the regional administration adds public-sector work. Gonja is the dominant language.<\/p>\n

    Damongo carries regional and district administration, a hospital, senior high schools and the main market. Guiding, lodging and transport work around Mole and Larabanga give a steady trickle of non-farm income. Elsewhere the single farming season governs the year, with shea gathering, charcoal burning and livestock sales filling the dry months. Grazing pressure near the park boundary is a recurring local issue.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Damongo is on the Fufulso-Sawla road, which leaves the Tamale-Kumasi highway at Fufulso junction and is paved for its full length. The drive from Tamale takes a few hours. Mole National Park is entered from Larabanga, a short distance west of Damongo.<\/p>\n
