    Krachi Nchumuru sits in the west of the Oti Region, on the eastern arm of the Volta Lake. The lake shoreline shapes the district: several communities are reached by boat as easily as by road. Land away from the water is flat to gently rolling guinea savanna, broken by farm bush and stream valleys. The district was carved out of the old Krachi area and shares borders with Krachi East<\/a> and Krachi West<\/a>, with Nkwanta South<\/a> to the east.<\/p>\n

    Rainfall comes in one long season, roughly April to October, and the dry months that follow bring harmattan winds off the north. Water levels on the lake rise and fall with that cycle, which changes how far vehicles can reach some landings. Chinderi, the capital, sits inland from the shore and serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding farming villages.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming and fishing carry the local economy. Households grow yam, cassava, maize, groundnut and vegetables, mostly on rain-fed plots worked by hand. Lakeside settlements fish the Volta and smoke the catch for sale inland. Chinderi holds the main market, and traders move yam and dried fish towards Kete Krachi and the larger southern markets. Nchumuru is the main language of the district, alongside Twi and Hausa in trading centres.<\/p>\n

    The district assembly runs basic schools, clinics and feeder-road maintenance from Chinderi. Market days pull sellers in from the smaller hamlets, and produce leaves by lorry or by boat depending on the season. Yam mounds go in at the start of the rains and the harvest sets the pace of trade from around August. Charcoal burning and shea nut gathering add dry-season income.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Chinderi is reached by road from Dambai, the regional capital, through the Krachi East corridor. From Accra or Kumasi, travellers usually route through Nkwanta or Kete Krachi and finish the trip on unpaved district roads. Lake ferries and passenger boats serve shoreline communities when roads are poor.<\/p>\n
