    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Yendi lies east of Tamale in the Northern Region on flat guinea savanna. Seasonal streams feed the Daka and Oti systems, and woodland thickens along the valleys. The town is the traditional capital of Dagbon and the seat of the Ya-Na, whose palace stands there.<\/p>\n

    The municipality borders Mion<\/a> to the west, Zabzugu<\/a> to the east, Saboba<\/a> to the north-east and Gushiegu<\/a> to the north.<\/p>\n

    The town itself is compact, built around the palace, the market and the main road, with farming villages spread out on all sides. Water comes from a treatment plant and boreholes. Yendi has been the seat of the Dagbon paramountcy for centuries and remains its ceremonial centre.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Yendi works as the market and service town for the eastern half of the region. Trade, transport, public administration, schools and a hospital employ many residents, while farming continues in the surrounding villages.<\/p>\n

    Yam, maize, groundnuts, sorghum, cowpea and rice are the main crops, and shea nut collection adds dry-season income. Cattle and small ruminants are traded at the Yendi market, which draws buyers from Tamale. Dagbani is the everyday language.<\/p>\n

    Its position halfway between Tamale and the Togo border makes Yendi a collection point. Produce from Zabzugu, Saboba and Tatale passes through on the way west, and manufactured goods move the other way. The market is busiest in the yam harvest months from September.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Yendi is about 95 km east of Tamale on a paved road, with buses and shared taxis running through the day. Roads continue east to Zabzugu and Tatale, north-east to Saboba and south toward Bimbilla.<\/p>\n
