    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Saboba lies in the far east of the Northern Region. The Oti River runs along its eastern side, on the boundary with Togo, and its floodplain carries the district’s best rice land. Elsewhere the country is savanna plain with wooded stream valleys.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Zabzugu<\/a> to the south, Yendi<\/a> to the south-west and Gushiegu<\/a> to the north-west, with Tatale-Sangule<\/a> to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Riverside villages sit above the flood line and move their gardens down onto the wet ground as the Oti drops after October. Away from the river the country is farmland and open savanna, with settlements of a few hundred people connected by tracks rather than surfaced roads.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Yam is the leading crop and the main cash earner, with maize, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea and valley rice alongside it. Fishing on the Oti supports the riverside villages, and dry-season gardening uses the receding floodplain.<\/p>\n

    Livestock and guinea fowl are kept widely. Saboba town holds the district market and the assembly offices, and cross-border trade with Togo moves goods both ways. Konkomba is the main language, with Dagbani used in trade.<\/p>\n

    Yam mounds are raised from December and harvested from July, so field work runs through most of the year. Traders arrive in the harvest months and load lorries at Saboba for Kumasi and Accra. Fish from the Oti is smoked and sold in the same markets.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Saboba is reached from Yendi by the road running north-east through Wapuli. Yendi connects to Tamale on a paved road, so most journeys start there. The final stretches are unpaved and can be difficult during the rains.<\/p>\n
