Sagnerigu is a municipal district in the Northern Region of Ghana. Its capital is Sagnarigu. It had a population of 341,711 at the 2021 census, up from 148,099 in 2010.<\/p>\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Sagnarigu wraps around the north and west of Tamale in the Northern Region. Much of it is continuous with the city: residential neighbourhoods, estates and institutions give way to farmland only a few kilometres out. The land is flat savanna without significant rivers.<\/p>\n

    The district borders the Tamale<\/a> metropolis to the south and east, Savelugu<\/a> to the north and Tolon<\/a> to the west, with Kumbungu<\/a> also adjoining on the north-western side.<\/p>\n

    The boundary between city and district is hard to see on the ground. Estates, institutions and new housing plots run continuously out from Tamale, and several communities on this list were farming villages a generation ago. Land pressure and plot sales are the local issue that comes up most often.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Most working residents depend on Tamale: trade, transport, construction, public service, schools and health facilities. Neighbourhood markets and roadside shops serve the housing areas, and rents and land sales have followed the city’s growth outward.<\/p>\n

    Farming continues on the outer settlements, mainly maize, rice, groundnuts and dry-season vegetables sold into Tamale. Shea processing and small-scale food preparation are common household activities. Dagbani is the everyday language.<\/p>\n

    Because the district surrounds the regional capital, its residents work in Tamale but pay rates and use services here. Schools, clinics and neighbourhood markets have been added quickly to keep pace with the population, which more than doubled between the two censuses.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Sagnarigu is part of the Tamale built-up area, so city taxis and minibuses reach most of it. The N10 to Bolgatanga and the roads west to Tolon and north-west to Kumbungu run through the district. Tamale International Airport is a short drive away.<\/p>\n
