    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Tolon lies west of Tamale in the Northern Region on flat guinea savanna. Seasonal streams drain west and north toward the White Volta, and the soils are mostly light and sandy, with heavier ground in the valley bottoms.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Kumbungu<\/a> to the north, Sagnarigu<\/a> and the Tamale<\/a> metropolis to the east. Nyankpala, one of its larger towns, hosts the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute and university teaching in agriculture.<\/p>\n

    Villages are strung along the Tamale road and the feeder tracks that branch from it. Nyankpala has grown into a small town around its research and teaching institutions, while most of the communities listed below remain farming settlements of a few hundred to a few thousand people.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Maize, rice, yam, groundnuts, cowpea and soya beans are the standard crops, planted with the first rains in May. Valley bottoms carry rice, and dry-season gardens near dams produce vegetables for Tamale. Shea nut gathering and butter making are widespread.<\/p>\n

    Cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are kept throughout. Research and extension work based at Nyankpala gives farmers here earlier access to improved seed than in most parts of the region. Tolon town holds the district market.<\/p>\n

    Work follows the rains. Land preparation starts in March and April, planting begins with the first reliable rains in May, and harvest runs from September to December. Dry-season income comes from shea, charcoal, dam-side gardening and short-term work in Tamale.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Tolon is about 25 km west of Tamale on the surfaced road through Nyankpala. Shared taxis and minibuses run through the day. Feeder roads head north to Kumbungu and west toward the White Volta crossings.<\/p>\n
