    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Kumbungu lies north-west of Tamale in the Northern Region, in the White Volta valley. The Bontanga reservoir and its irrigation scheme sit in the district and supply water for dry-season cropping. Land is flat, with floodplain along the river and its tributaries.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Tolon<\/a> to the south and Savelugu<\/a> to the east, with Sagnarigu<\/a> adjoining on the south-eastern side.<\/p>\n

    Villages sit on the higher ground above the floodplain, with rice fields and gardens laid out below them. The river and reservoir keep water available later into the dry season than in most of the region, which is why farming here does not stop when the rains end in October.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Rice is the signature crop, grown both in rainfed valleys and under the Bontanga scheme. Maize, yam, groundnuts, cowpea and soya beans follow. Dry-season irrigated plots produce tomatoes, onions and pepper that reach Tamale markets within the hour.<\/p>\n

    Fishing on the reservoir and the White Volta supports several riverside settlements, including the Addah fishing village. Livestock, shea processing and small trade fill out household incomes. Dagbani is the everyday language.<\/p>\n

    Two farming seasons are possible on irrigated land: rainfed cropping from May, then vegetables and rice under irrigation from November. That second season is the district’s main advantage, and it draws seasonal labour from villages further north that have only one harvest.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Kumbungu is about 25 km north-west of Tamale by road through Dalun. The route is surfaced for much of the way and passable year-round. Shared taxis run from Tamale, and feeder roads link the riverside villages.<\/p>\n
