    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Savelugu lies immediately north of Tamale in the Northern Region, astride the N10 trunk road. The land is flat savanna crossed by the Nabogo and other tributaries of the White Volta, which flood their valleys in the wet season and shrink to pools in the dry months.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Kumbungu<\/a> to the west, Karaga<\/a> to the east and the Tamale<\/a> metropolis to the south, with Sagnarigu<\/a> adjoining on the southern side as well.<\/p>\n

    The N10 shapes settlement in the district. Villages string along the highway and the feeder roads that run off it, while communities near the Nabogo valley sit slightly back from ground that floods each year. Boreholes and small dams supply most households with water.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Maize, rice, yam, groundnuts, cowpea and sorghum are the main crops. Valley bottoms along the Nabogo carry rice, and dry-season gardening produces tomatoes, onions, pepper and leafy vegetables for the Tamale market. Shea nut collection and butter making bring cash to women’s groups.<\/p>\n

    Livestock keeping is general, with cattle, small ruminants and guinea fowl. Savelugu town sits on the highway and holds the district’s main market, which draws traders travelling between Tamale and the Upper regions.<\/p>\n

    Being an hour from Tamale changes what farmers grow. Perishable vegetables, fresh maize and milk reach the city market the same morning, which is not practical from districts further out. Grain and yam still go to traders who load for the south during the harvest months.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Savelugu is about 25 km north of Tamale on the paved N10, the road that continues to Walewale and Bolgatanga. Traffic runs all day, and shared taxis leave Tamale frequently. Feeder roads lead west to Kumbungu and east toward Karaga.<\/p>\n
