    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Nanumba South lies at the southern edge of the Northern Region and forms the southern half of the Nanumba traditional area. The Oti Region begins across its southern boundary. Savanna woodland covers much of the district, and streams drain south and east.<\/p>\n

    The district borders Nanumba North<\/a> to the north and Kpandai<\/a> to the west. The rains run from about April to October, long enough for cassava and other roots alongside grain.<\/p>\n

    Wulensi is the largest settlement, and the rest of the district is farming villages connected by feeder roads. Longer rains and more tree cover than the north support cassava, plantain in sheltered spots and a wider range of vegetables. The communities on this list are mostly small farming settlements.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Yam is the leading crop and the main source of cash, sold on to traders who load for Kumasi and Accra. Cassava, maize, groundnuts, cowpea and rice fill out the farming year, and tree crops do better here than in the drier north.<\/p>\n

    Livestock keeping is general, with cattle, small ruminants and poultry. Wulensi holds the district market and the assembly offices, and smaller markets rotate through the villages. Nanuni is the main language.<\/p>\n

    Harvest from July to December is the busy period, when yam lorries work the district roads daily. Cassava is processed into gari and dried chips in the villages, which lets households sell through the year rather than only at harvest.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Wulensi lies south of Bimbilla on the road running down from Yendi, and most journeys from Tamale take that route. Roads within the district are largely unpaved and slow during the rainy season.<\/p>\n
