    Geography<\/h2>\n

    West Mamprusi covers the western half of the Mamprugu traditional area, in the Guinea savanna of northern Ghana. The land is flat to gently undulating, broken by the White Volta and its tributary the Nasia River, which floods low ground in the rains. One rainy season runs from about May to October; the dry harmattan months follow. It borders East Mamprusi<\/a> to the east and Mamprugo Moaduri<\/a> to the west, with the Upper East Region to the north.<\/p>\n

    Settlement is dispersed. Compound houses stand among the fields rather than clustered in tight villages, the normal pattern across the Mamprugu area. Many of the names listed below are small farming communities of a few hundred people. Walewale itself is the exception, a genuinely urban town grown around the highway junction and its market.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming employs most households. Maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, soya and rice are the main crops, with rice grown on the Nasia floodplain. Shea nut picking and processing is an important dry-season income for women, and cattle, sheep, goats and guinea fowl are kept throughout the district. Walewale’s market is one of the largest in the region. It is a grain and livestock collection point for traders from Tamale, Bolgatanga and Kumasi. Janga and Nasia hold smaller periodic markets.<\/p>\n

    Incomes are highly seasonal. The single rainy season means one main harvest. Dry-season work turns to shea, petty trade, livestock sales and labour migration south towards Kumasi and Accra. Dry-season vegetable growing along the Nasia and small dams supplements this where water is available. Rice milling and groundnut processing operate at a small scale around Walewale.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Walewale lies on the N10 trunk road, roughly 100 km north of Tamale and about 60 km south of Bolgatanga. Every bus running between the two stops there. From Accra the journey is a long day by road through Kumasi and Tamale. Feeder roads to outlying villages are gravel and can be difficult after heavy rain.<\/p>\n
