Adentan is a municipal district in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Its capital is
\nAdentan. The municipality had 237,546 people at the 2021 census, against 78,215 in 2010, one of the
\nfastest increases recorded anywhere in the region.<\/p>\n

It is a residential district on Accra’s north-eastern edge, built up almost entirely since the
\n1990s. The name is also spelt Adenta, and both forms are in common use locally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Adentan sits about 15 km north-east of central Accra, on the plain below the
    \nAkuapem range. The municipality is compact and almost fully built up, laid out around the
    \nMadina–Adentan highway that runs on towards Dodowa. Estates such as Ashaley Botwe, Ogbojo and
    \nthe Adentan housing scheme make up most of its area.<\/p>\n

    It adjoins Ga East<\/a> to the west
    \nand north-west, with     Shai
    \nOsudoku<\/a> further out along the Dodowa road. Drainage runs south towards the Songo and Kpeshie
    \nsystems, and stormwater flooding on the highway is a long-running problem. The original Adentan
    \nhousing scheme, laid out by the state in the 1960s, is the core the later estates grew around.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Adentan is a dormitory municipality. The great majority of working residents commute
    \ninto Accra, and the local economy is built on housing, retail, transport, private schools and
    \nclinics. Land values are high and estate development remains the dominant business, with building
    \nsupply yards, hardware shops and estate agents on every main road.<\/p>\n

    Shops, banks and eateries line the highway between Madina and Adentan barrier, and the daily market
    \nserves the surrounding estates. Street trading concentrates at the barrier and at the estate
    \njunctions. There is very little farming left within the municipality; the last open plots have gone
    \nto housing since 2010.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The Madina–Adentan highway, an extension of the Accra–Aburi road,
    \nis the main approach; the Motorway Extension and the Legon roads connect it to the rest of Accra. The
    \nhighway continues north-east to Dodowa and the Shai plains.<\/p>\n

    Trotros run from Madina, Circle and 37 stations through the day, and Adentan barrier is the main
    \nlorry stop for onward travel to Dodowa. Kotoka International Airport is about 12 km south-west,
    \nand peak-hour traffic on the highway can double the journey time.<\/p>\n
