    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Ayensuano lies in the southern part of the Eastern Region, in the forest belt between the Densu and
    \nAyensu rivers. The land is gently rolling and well watered, with patches of remaining forest between farms and
    \ncocoa plots. Coaltar and Kraboa Coaltar sit on the road that crosses the district from north-west to
    \nsouth-east.<\/p>\n

    It borders Suhum<\/a> to the north, Upper West Akim<\/a> to the west and
    \n    West Akim<\/a> beyond it.<\/p>\n

    The district lies in the double-maxima rainfall belt, with a long wet season from March to July and a
    \nshorter one in September and October, so two croppings a year are normal. Soils are forest ochrosols, deep and
    \nwell drained, which is why cocoa and oil palm do well here.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa, oil palm and citrus are the cash crops; cassava, maize, plantain, cocoyam and vegetables feed
    \nhouseholds and the nearby city markets. Oil-palm plantations and small mills operate in several communities,
    \nand palm oil is a regular item in local trade. Coaltar and Asuboi hold the main markets, and proximity to
    \nNsawam and Accra means a good share of farm produce leaves the district fresh, by truck, the same week it is
    \nharvested.<\/p>\n

    Coaltar holds the district offices and the larger schools and clinics; residents also use Nsawam and
    \nSuhum for hospital care, banking and wholesale goods. Sand winning, sawmilling and transport work supplement
    \nfarm income in communities along the main roads.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Coaltar is about 60 km from Accra. The common route is the Accra–Kumasi highway to Nsawam or
    \nSuhum, then a branch road east or south into the district. Trotros from Nsawam and Suhum serve Coaltar,
    \nAsuboi and Kraboa Coaltar; feeder roads reach the smaller farming villages.<\/p>\n
