    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Yilo Krobo covers the hills and lower slopes west of the Krobo mountain, in the south-east of the
    \nEastern Region. The land is broken and stony in the east and flattens westward toward the Akuapim foothills.
    \nStreams here drain south into the Volta plain.<\/p>\n

    It borders Lower Manya Krobo<\/a> to the east and Upper Manya Krobo<\/a> to the north. The
    \nAkuapim ridge runs away to the south-west, toward     Akuapim South<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Two rainy seasons water the district, the main one from April to July, and the harmattan is felt from
    \nDecember. Soils on the lower slopes are shallow and stony, which favours tree crops such as mango over
    \ncontinuous cropping.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Most households farm. Mango is the signature crop of the Somanya area, alongside cassava, maize,
    \npepper, garden eggs and other vegetables grown for the Accra market. Nkurakan sits on a busy stretch of road
    \nand holds a large produce market that draws traders from the capital. Powder-glass bead making, common to both
    \nKrobo areas, is practised in a number of communities, and Somanya carries the district’s shops, banks, schools
    \nand transport yards.<\/p>\n

    Somanya carries the municipal offices, a hospital, banks and several second-cycle and tertiary
    \ninstitutions, which brings students and staff into the town. Away from the road, communities rely on weekly
    \nmarkets and shared taxis for supplies and for moving produce.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Somanya is about 70 km from Accra. The usual route runs through Dodowa and Nkurakan, or through Kpong
    \non the Accra–Ho road. Trotros and shared taxis serve Somanya from Accra, Koforidua and Odumase all day,
    \nand a tarred road links Somanya to Huhunya and the northern communities.<\/p>\n
