The Kpong headpond and the lower Volta floodplain mark its eastern
edge, and the ground rises westward toward the Krobo and Yilo ridges. Akuse and Kpong sit on the river; the
older settlements cluster on the higher land behind them.

It shares boundaries with Yilo Krobo to the west, Upper Manya Krobo to the north and
Asuogyaman across the river to the east.

Rainfall comes in two seasons, heavier from April to July and again in the autumn, and the lower
Volta plain here is drier than the forest districts further west. The Krobo mountain, the group’s historic
settlement site before the move to the plains, stands above the towns.

Economy and Local Life

Farming is the main livelihood: cassava, maize, pepper, okra, tomatoes and mangoes, with irrigated
plots near the river. River and lake fishing adds to it around Akuse and Kpong. The market at Agomanya is the
best known in the area and the centre of the Krobo glass-bead trade, which recycles glass into powder-glass
beads sold across Ghana and abroad. Bead making, small-scale trading and transport work along the main road
give the municipality more non-farm income than most districts of its size.

Odumase Krobo holds the municipal offices, the main hospital and several second-cycle schools, and
Kpong has long been a river and rail transfer point. Dipo, the Krobo initiation rite for girls, is still
observed in the towns each year and draws family members home.

Getting There

Odumase Krobo is roughly 80 km from Accra on the Accra–Ho road, through Somanya. Shared taxis and
trotros run continuously between Somanya, Agomanya, Odumase and Kpong, and the same road continues east over
the Volta at the Adomi Bridge.

FAQ

What is the capital of Lower Manya Krobo?

Odumase Krobo is the district capital.

Which region is Lower Manya Krobo in?

It is in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

What is the population of Lower Manya Krobo?

The 2021 census recorded 121,478 people.
