Arms of Lake Volta enclose it on most sides, and the land inside is flat woodland savanna with few hills. Rainfall is lower and more seasonal than in the forest districts to the south, and settlements are widely spaced along earth roads. Donkorkrom stands near the centre. Kwahu North borders Kwahu Afram Plains South to the south, with Kwahu East and Kwahu South lying beyond the scarp further south.

The lake gives the district a long shoreline and many landing beaches, and boat travel is often quicker than the road between lakeside communities.

Economy and Local Life

Farming, herding and fishing account for most work. Yam is the signature crop, grown with maize, cassava, groundnut, cowpea and vegetables, and the plains send yams to markets across southern Ghana. Cattle, sheep and goats are kept in large numbers, and seasonal herding movements are a recurring source of friction with crop farmers. Fishing camps line the lake, and smoked fish moves out with the produce lorries. Services are thinly spread, so Donkorkrom carries the district hospital, market and offices.

Migrant farmers from other parts of Ghana have settled here over decades and farm much of the land under tenancy. Schools, clinics and markets are widely spaced, so residents of outlying communities travel long distances for basic services, and the ferry timetable shapes trade with the south.

Getting There

The usual approach is the Adawso to Ekye Amanfrom ferry across Lake Volta, reached by road from Koforidua or Mamfe, then north by road to Donkorkrom. A longer land route runs in from Nkawkaw and the Afram Plains South side. Roads within the district are earth and slow going in the rains.

FAQ

What is the capital of Kwahu North?

Donkorkrom is the capital of Kwahu North, officially Kwahu Afram Plains North District.

Which region is Kwahu North in?

Kwahu North is in the Eastern Region of Ghana, on the Afram Plains beside Lake Volta.

What is the population of Kwahu North?

The district recorded 66,555 residents at the 2021 census; the 2010 count for the area was 102,423.

How many towns are listed for Kwahu North?

This page lists 9 towns and communities in the district, sorted A to Z.

Kwahu North is a district in the Eastern Region of Ghana, covering the northern Afram Plains.
