The land is gently rolling, drained by streams running to the Birim, and largely under cocoa and food farms with patches of secondary forest. Ofoase and Ayirebi sit near the centre, with villages strung along the feeder roads. The district borders Birim Central to the west, Birim South to the south-west and Birim North to the north.

The district was carved out of the older Birim districts and remains largely rural, with no town approaching the size of Akim Oda next door.

Economy and Local Life

Almost every household farms. Cocoa is the cash crop, with oil palm, plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and citrus grown for food and local sale. Palm oil pressing, gari processing and charcoal burning give off-season income, and small-scale gold winning occurs in places along the streams. Weekly markets at Ofoase and Ayirebi move produce towards Akim Oda and on to Accra and Kumasi. Most communities are small, and feeder roads decide how easily farmers get crops out during the rains.

Ofoase holds the district assembly, the main health centre and the senior high schools, so residents travel in for services as well as for market. Cocoa purchasing clerks, transport owners and food traders form most of the non-farming economy.

Getting There

Ofoase is reached from Akim Oda by the road east through Akim Swedru, a run of roughly 30 km, and lies about 120 km from Koforidua. From Accra drivers take the Nsawam, Suhum and Asamankese road to Oda, then turn east. Trotros run to Oda from Accra and connect on to Ofoase and Ayirebi.

FAQ

What is the capital of Akyemansa?

Ofoase is the capital of Akyemansa District.

Which region is Akyemansa in?

Akyemansa is in the Eastern Region of Ghana, in the farming country east of Akim Oda.

What is the population of Akyemansa?

The district had 91,038 residents at the 2021 census, against 97,374 in 2010.

How many towns are listed for Akyemansa?

This page lists 37 towns and communities in the district, sorted A to Z.

Akyemansa is a district in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
