    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The municipality lies in the south-west of the Eastern Region, in the moist forest zone. The name means “the dark forest”, and blocks of high forest still stand between the farms and plantations. Streams feeding the Birim drain most of the area. Kade sits at the road junction near the centre. Kwaebibirem borders Denkyembour<\/a> to the east, Atiwa<\/a> to the north-east and Birim Central<\/a> to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Rainfall is high and comes in two seasons, which suits tree crops, and low hills break up the otherwise level ground west of the river. Feeder roads link the villages to the Kade junction, and the main tarred roads run east towards Akwatia and north towards the highway.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Oil palm is the defining crop. Large plantations and an estate mill at Kwae buy fruit from thousands of outgrowers, and small mills pressing red oil operate in many villages. Cocoa, plantain, cassava and citrus are the other mainstays, and forest reserves in the area support a timber trade. Kade’s market and lorry park serve the surrounding farming towns, and the town holds the municipal offices, banks and the main hospital.<\/p>\n

    Work on the plantations, in the mills and in haulage gives the municipality more wage employment than most rural districts in the region, and the population has grown steadily as a result. Palm kernel oil, soap making and gari processing are common household trades, and small-scale gold winning occurs along some streams.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Kade is about 100 km from Accra by the road through Nsawam, Suhum and Asamankese, and roughly 90 km south-west of Koforidua. A road east links Kade to Akwatia and Akim Oda, and another runs north to the Accra to Kumasi highway. Trotros work the Accra and Oda routes daily.<\/p>\n
