The land is low and undulating, with farm bush and remnant forest between the settlements. Akim Oda stands near the centre of the municipality and serves as the market and transport hub for the surrounding villages. It borders Birim North to the north, Birim South to the south and Akyemansa to the east.

Rainfall comes in two seasons, the heavier one from March to July, and the Birim floods low ground near the town in bad years.

Economy and Local Life

Cocoa built Akim Oda and still underwrites the local economy, with buying stations, haulage and input dealers clustered in the town. Oil palm, plantain, cassava, cocoyam and citrus fill out the farming year. The Birim valley is diamond country, and small-scale winning of stones and gold continues along the river. Akim Oda’s market pulls traders from across Akyem, and the town holds the municipal offices, banks, a hospital and the second-cycle schools that serve the district.

Akim Oda is also a road haulage point, with timber and cocoa lorries loading for Accra and Tema, and workshops along the main road servicing them.

Getting There

Akim Oda lies about 100 km south-west of Koforidua by road. From Accra the usual route runs through Nsawam, Suhum and Asamankese, then on through Akwatia or Akim Swedru. Buses and trotros work the Accra to Oda run daily, and a road north links the town to Kade and the N6 highway.

FAQ

What is the capital of Birim Central?

Akim Oda is the capital of the Birim Central Municipal district.

Which region is Birim Central in?

Birim Central is in the Eastern Region of Ghana, in the Birim valley south-west of Koforidua.

What is the population of Birim Central?

The municipality had 76,302 residents at the 2021 census, against 67,993 in 2010.

How many towns are listed for Birim Central?

This page lists 39 towns and communities in the municipality, sorted A to Z.

Birim Central is a municipal district in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
