    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Kwahu South covers part of the Kwahu plateau in the north of the Eastern Region. The plateau stands
    \nseveral hundred metres above the plain, and its southern edge falls away in a steep scarp, with the towns
    \nstrung along the top of it. The height makes the district cooler than the lowlands, and the views from the
    \nscarp are the reason for its visitor traffic.<\/p>\n

    Other Eastern Region districts in this part of the region include Upper Manya Krobo<\/a> to the
    \nsouth-east and     Birim North<\/a> to the south-west.<\/p>\n

    Rainfall is good on the plateau, with the main season from April to July and a second in the autumn,
    \nand temperatures run several degrees below those at Nkawkaw on the plain. Streams rise on the plateau and
    \ndrop over the scarp in steep valleys.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming on the plateau produces maize, cassava, plantain, cocoyam, vegetables and some cocoa on the
    \nlower slopes, and the cooler nights suit tomatoes and garden vegetables sold down in Nkawkaw. Trading is the
    \nother mainstay, with Kwahu people long established in commerce across Ghana. Easter brings large numbers of
    \nvisitors home and up to the scarp, and the guest houses, food sellers and transport operators of Mpraeso,
    \nAtibie and Obo take much of their annual income in that one week.<\/p>\n

    Mpraeso carries the district offices, a hospital and several long-established second-cycle schools that
    \ndraw students from outside the district. Remittances from Kwahu traders working elsewhere in Ghana are a real
    \npart of household income here.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Mpraeso is reached from Nkawkaw on the Accra–Kumasi highway, about 15 km up a winding tarred road
    \nto the top of the scarp. Nkawkaw is roughly 170 km from Accra and served by every highway bus; shared taxis
    \nclimb from Nkawkaw to Mpraeso, Atibie and Obo through the day.<\/p>\n
