Suhum\/Kraboa\/Coaltar is a municipal district in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Its capital is Suhum. It had a population of 126,403 at the 2021 census, up from 90,358 in 2010. The former Suhum\/Kraboa\/Coaltar district is now Suhum Municipal; the Kraboa and Coaltar areas were separated to form Ayensuano District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Suhum lies in the south of the Eastern Region, in the forest belt on the Accra–Kumasi highway. The
    \nland is rolling and well watered, and cocoa, oil palm and food farms cover most of it. The town itself grew at
    \nthe highway junction and spreads along it.<\/p>\n

    Its neighbours in the region include Ayensuano<\/a> to the south, West Akim<\/a> to the west and
    \n    Akuapim South<\/a> on the ridge to the south-east.<\/p>\n

    Rain falls in two seasons, March to July and September to October, and the area records over a metre a
    \nyear, which suits tree crops. Forest ochrosols cover most of the municipality; the standing forest is now
    \nconfined to reserves and farm shade trees.<\/p>\n

    Adidiso, Densuso, Amanhia and Okorasi are among the farming communities around the town, linked to it by
    \nfeeder roads that carry produce to the market and the highway.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Suhum is a farming and trading municipality. Cocoa and oil palm are the main cash crops, with citrus,
    \ncassava, plantain, cocoyam and maize also grown in quantity. The town’s market is one of the busiest on the
    \nsouthern stretch of the Accra–Kumasi road; produce buyers load trucks for Accra several times a week.
    \nHighway traffic supports fuel stations, food stalls, workshops and transport businesses along the main
    \nroad.<\/p>\n

    Suhum carries the municipal offices, a hospital, banks and several second-cycle schools, and it serves
    \ncommunities from neighbouring districts as well. Gari processing, palm-oil boiling, sawmilling and vehicle
    \nrepair are common trades.<\/p>\n

    Because the highway runs through it, the municipality also draws income from haulage, roadside trading and
    \nfood sales to passing travellers, which few inland districts can match.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Suhum is about 60 km north of Accra on the Accra–Kumasi highway, roughly an hour outside peak
    \ntraffic, and around 40 km from Koforidua. Every long-distance bus on that highway passes the Suhum junction,
    \nand trotros run from Accra, Nsawam and Koforidua all day.<\/p>\n
