    Geography<\/h2>\n

    West Akim lies in the south-west of the Eastern Region, in the forest zone between the Densu and Birim
    \nbasins. The land is undulating and largely farmed, with cocoa and oil palm on the slopes and food crops close
    \nto settlements. Asamankese sits at a road junction that links Nsawam, Oda and Kade.<\/p>\n

    It borders Upper West Akim<\/a> to the south, Ayensuano<\/a> to the east and
    \n    Birim South<\/a> to the north-west.<\/p>\n

    The municipality lies in the wet semi-equatorial zone, with a main rainy season from March to July and a
    \nminor one in September and October. Forest soils are deep and fertile, and remnant forest survives mainly in
    \nreserves and on steep slopes.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Asamankese is first a trading town. Its market handles cocoa, palm oil, cassava, gari, plantain,
    \nmaize and manufactured goods, and traders come in from Nsawam, Oda and Accra. Around it, farming households
    \ngrow cocoa, oil palm and citrus for sale and cassava, plantain and cocoyam for the home and market. Palm-oil
    \nprocessing, gari making, carpentry and transport are the common non-farm trades.<\/p>\n

    Asamankese carries the municipal offices, a hospital, banks and several second-cycle schools, which
    \nmakes it the service centre for a wide area including neighbouring districts. Sawmilling, gari processing and
    \nvehicle repair are established trades in the town.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Asamankese is roughly 70 km from Accra by way of Nsawam and Adeiso, and about 80 km from Koforidua.
    \nBuses and trotros serve it from Accra, Kade and Oda daily. Tarred roads run north to Oda and west toward Kade;
    \nvillage roads off them are earth surfaced.<\/p>\n
