    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Akuapim South occupies the southern tip of the Akuapim range in the Eastern Region. Aburi stands at
    \nabout 400 m on the ridge, and the ground drops sharply east and south to the Accra plains, so the district is
    \nnoticeably cooler and wetter than the lowland immediately below it. Berekuso, Pakro and Obodan lie on the
    \nslopes and at the foot of the ridge.<\/p>\n

    Other Eastern Region districts nearby include Suhum<\/a> and
    \n    Ayensuano<\/a> to the north-west.<\/p>\n

    Rain is heavier on the ridge than on the plains below, falling mainly between April and July with a
    \nsecond season in the autumn, and mornings on the crest are often misty. The slopes are steep enough that
    \nerosion control matters on cultivated land.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    The ridge climate suits horticulture. Farms produce pineapple, citrus, pawpaw, plantain, cocoyam,
    \nvegetables and some cocoa, and ornamental plant nurseries line the road at Aburi. Aburi is also a long-standing
    \ncentre for wood carving, and its craft stalls, the botanical gardens and the ridge-top views bring weekend
    \nvisitors up from Accra. Restaurants, guest houses and transport work give the district a service economy
    \nunusual for its size.<\/p>\n

    Aburi carries the district offices, schools, clinics and a large weekly market, and residents also use
    \nNsawam and Accra for hospital care and wholesale supplies. Commuting is common: a good number of households
    \nwork in Accra and live on the ridge for the cooler air.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Aburi is about 30 km from Accra, up the Ayimensa–Aburi road from Madina or through Adenta, and the
    \nclimb takes under an hour outside peak traffic. Trotros run from Accra’s Madina and Tema stations. The ridge
    \nroad continues north to Mampong Akuapim and Adawso.<\/p>\n
