    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Birim North sits in the north-west of the Eastern Region, in the forest zone drained by the Birim
    \nRiver and its tributaries. The ground is undulating, with forest reserve blocks between farming communities.
    \nNew Abirem and Ntronang lie along the road running north-west from the Bunso area.<\/p>\n

    Neighbouring districts in the region include Birim South<\/a> and Denkyembour<\/a> to the
    \nsouth-west.<\/p>\n

    Rainfall comes in two seasons, the main one from March to July and a second in September and October,
    \ntotalling well over a metre a year, and the district keeps substantial forest reserve cover. The Birim and its
    \nfeeder streams drain the area south-eastward.<\/p>\n

    New Abirem, Afosu, Ntronang and Nkwateng are the larger settlements; the rest of the district is made up of
    \nfarming villages and mining-camp communities linked by feeder roads.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Cocoa is the backbone of the farming economy, with oil palm, plantain, cocoyam, cassava and maize
    \ngrown around it. The district also sits on part of the Birim gold belt, and large-scale gold mining operates
    \nnear New Abirem alongside long-standing small-scale workings. Mining has pulled in workers, raised local
    \nrents and put more cash through the New Abirem market, but farming still employs most households.<\/p>\n

    New Abirem carries the district offices, the hospital and the main schools, and its market is where
    \nsurrounding villages buy and sell. Cocoa buying companies keep depots in the larger towns during the main
    \nseason, and truck traffic to and from the mine keeps the through road busy.<\/p>\n

    Chainsaw milling, charcoal burning, food vending and transport work provide the common non-farm incomes.
    \nLand pressure between mining and cocoa farming is a live local issue.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    New Abirem is reached from the Accra–Kumasi highway at Bunso junction, then west through Ntronang,
    \nor from Oda and Akwatia to the south. It is roughly 60 km from Koforidua, the regional capital. Trotros run
    \nfrom Koforidua, Oda and Kade.<\/p>\n
