    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Cape Coast sits on a rocky stretch of the Gulf of Guinea shore, built over low hills that run down to the sea. The old town is dense and walkable; newer growth spreads inland through Pedu, Adisadel, Nkanfoa and Abura. Rainfall is modest for southern Ghana, and the coastal savanna vegetation gives way to forest a short way inland. Komenda\/Edina\/Eguafo\/Abirem<\/a> lies immediately west, and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira<\/a> lies inland to the north. The 2021 census figure covers the metropolis before its division into Cape Coast North and Cape Coast South municipal districts.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Education and public administration are the mainstay. The University of Cape Coast and a cluster of long-established senior high schools bring thousands of students into the city each term, and the region’s government offices sit here. Tourism is the second pillar: Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, anchors a visitor trade that extends to the forts and beaches along the coast. Canoe fishing works out of the beach below the castle, and Kotokuraba market handles the daily food trade. The Fetu Afahye festival is held each September.<\/p>\n

    Fante is the everyday language of the city, with English used in schools and offices. The old quarters, Asafo company posts and colonial-era buildings along the shore give the centre its character, while the university and the schools keep the population young in term time. Kotokuraba and Abura carry most of the daily retail trade.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The N1 coastal highway links Cape Coast to Accra, about a three-hour drive east, and to Takoradi about 80 km west. Intercity coaches and trotros run all day from Accra’s Kaneshie and Circle stations. From Kumasi the road runs south through the Assin country to reach the city.<\/p>\n
