    Geography<\/h2>\n

    Assin South lies in the northern half of the Central Region, well away from the sea. It is forest country, drained by tributaries of the Pra River, with farm settlements strung along feeder roads rather than one dominant town. Assin North<\/a> lies to the north, and Twifo Ati-Morkwa<\/a> to the west. Rainfall is heavy and comes in two seasons, which suits tree crops.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming carries the district. Cocoa is the main cash crop, grown alongside oil palm, citrus, plantain, cassava and maize for the home market. Small sawmilling and charcoal burning follow the timber. Assin Manso is the best known settlement here: the Slave River site at Nnonkonsuo, where captives were washed before the march to the coastal forts, draws visitors and an annual commemoration. Weekly markets at the larger villages move farm produce toward Assin Fosu and Cape Coast.<\/p>\n

    Most people here speak Fante, and the district’s traditional areas hold their own akwambo and yam festivals through the year. Schooling and health services concentrate in the larger villages, so families in the smaller farm settlements travel to reach them. Land is held under family and stool arrangements, and cocoa plots are commonly worked on share agreements between owners and caretaker farmers.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    The Cape Coast to Kumasi trunk road runs through the Assin country, and most journeys into the district start from it. Nsuaem Kyekyewere is about 70 km north of Cape Coast by road. Trotros and shared taxis from Cape Coast and Assin Fosu serve the main villages; the smaller farm settlements sit on untarred feeder roads.<\/p>\n
