    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The district lies in the middle belt of the region, north of the coastal districts and south of the Breman country. Asikuma\/Odoben\/Brakwa<\/a> lies to the north-west, Ekumfi<\/a> to the south-east and Abura\/Asebu\/Kwamankese<\/a> to the south-west. The land is undulating and drained by small tributaries of the Ochi and Ayensu rivers, with farm bush and oil palm covering most of it. Rainfall is moderate and falls in two seasons, and the wetter northern part carries patches of remaining forest. Villages string out along the roads linking Ajumako, Enyan Denkyira and Essiam.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming employs most households: cassava, maize, plantain, cocoyam and vegetables for food, with oil palm, citrus and some cocoa sold on. Palm oil pressing and gari processing are common village trades, and kente and cloth weaving is practised in parts of Enyan. Ajumako holds the district market and the assembly, and the town is also known for a university campus that teaches Ghanaian languages. Weekly markets in the larger villages move food to Mankessim, which is the region’s biggest trading centre. Remittances from relatives in Accra and abroad matter to many households.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Ajumako is reached from Mankessim on the Accra\u2013Cape Coast highway, about 20 km south-east, by a tarred road through Enyan country. Trotros run from Mankessim through the day. From Accra the trip takes roughly two and a half hours. Feeder roads link Ajumako north to the Breman towns and south toward the coastal districts; some need care in the rains.<\/p>\n
