The Okyi and Ayensu rivers cross the district, and the vegetation is coastal thicket and secondary bush rather than closed forest. Rainfall is light, and the ground is mostly low and gently rolling, rising slightly toward the Awutu hills in the north-east.

Economy and Local Life

The eastern end of the district has been pulled into the Kasoa and Accra housing sprawl, and Buduburam, first laid out as a settlement for Liberian refugees, is now a crowded township of traders and tenants. Elsewhere the district farms cassava, maize, pineapple, pepper and oil palm for the Accra market, with poultry and sand-winning as sidelines. Potsin holds the assembly, and Buduburam and Afransi carry the busiest markets. Land sales and building work are a large part of the local economy, and quarrying and sand-winning supply the Accra construction trade. Transport work along the highway employs many households.

Getting There

The Accra–Cape Coast highway runs through the district past Buduburam and Potsin, so access is straightforward from both directions. Accra is about an hour east of Potsin outside rush hour, Cape Coast about ninety minutes west. Feeder roads run north from the highway to the inland villages. Trotros bound for Winneba, Swedru and Cape Coast all pass through, so most communities on the main road are easy to reach at any hour.

FAQ

What is the capital of Gomoa East District?

Potsin is the district capital and the seat of the district assembly.

Which region is Gomoa East in?

Gomoa East is in the Central Region of Ghana, next to the Greater Accra boundary.

What is the population of Gomoa East?

The 2021 census counted 308,697 people in the district as now drawn.

How many towns and villages are listed for Gomoa East?

This page lists 50 towns and communities in Gomoa East District.

Gomoa East is a district in the Central Region of Ghana, at the eastern end of the region behind the coast.
