Awutu Senya is a district in the Central Region of Ghana, at the eastern edge of the region. Its capital is Awutu Breku. The former Awutu Senya District was later split, and the Kasoa area became the separate Awutu Senya East Municipal District. The western remainder, listed by the census as Awutu Senya West, had a population of 161,460 at the 2021 census; Awutu Senya East counted 236,527.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The district lies in the north-east corner of the Central Region, inland of the coast and on the boundary with Greater Accra. Awutu Senya East<\/a> lies to the east around Kasoa, and Gomoa East<\/a> to the south and west. The Ayensu river drains the district, and the ground is coastal savanna and thicket giving way to farmland, drier than the forest districts further west. The Awutu hills rise in the north of the district, and the lower ground carries grass and thicket cleared for farms. Rainfall is unreliable, so many farms depend on the two short wet seasons.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Maize, cassava, pepper, tomatoes, watermelon and pineapple are the main crops, much of it grown for the Accra and Kasoa markets. Poultry and small-scale livestock keeping are widespread, and quarrying for building stone and sand serves the constant demand from construction along the Accra fringe. Bawjiasi and Awutu Breku hold the main markets, and Awutu Breku houses the district assembly. Charcoal burning and food processing supplement farm incomes, and a growing share of residents commute to work in Kasoa or Accra.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Access is from the Accra\u2013Cape Coast highway at Kasoa, from where a tarred road runs north-west through Bawjiasi to Awutu Breku. Kasoa itself is about 30 km from central Accra. A second route reaches the district from the Winneba road via Bontrasi. Trotros and shared taxis run from Kasoa station to Bawjiasi and Awutu Breku through the day, and feeder roads serve the villages beyond.<\/p>\n
