Its shoreline runs along the Gulf of Guinea, and the Muni-Pomadze lagoon and wetland lie just west of Winneba. Behind the beach ridge the land is dry coastal scrub and grassland rather than forest, and rainfall is lower here than in the inland districts. Two rainy seasons fall, the heavier from April to July, and the dry harmattan months turn the grassland brown. The wetland west of town is a protected site and holds waterbirds through the northern winter.

Economy and Local Life

Canoe fishing off Winneba is the traditional mainstay, with smoking and salting of the catch done by women traders at the landing beach. Education is now the larger employer: Winneba hosts a public university and several colleges, and student rents drive much of the local building trade. The town is also known for the annual Aboakyer deer-hunt festival of the Effutu people, held in May, which fills the streets with visitors. Winneba also keeps a working market and a lorry station serving the surrounding Gomoa villages. Salt winning from the lagoon margins and small-scale trade in fish and building materials round out local incomes.

Getting There

Winneba lies about 5 km south of the Accra–Cape Coast highway; drivers leave the main road at Winneba Junction and run straight down to the town. Trotros and coaches from Accra take roughly ninety minutes in normal traffic. Cape Coast is about 90 km further west along the same highway. Inside the municipality, shared taxis link Winneba to the fishing quarter, the university campuses and the outlying settlements.

FAQ

What is the capital of Effutu Municipal District?

Winneba is the municipal capital and the seat of the municipal assembly.

Which region is Effutu in?

Effutu is in the Central Region of Ghana, on the coast east of Cape Coast.

What is the population of Effutu?

The 2021 census counted 107,798 people, against 68,597 in 2010.

How many towns and communities are listed for Effutu?

This page lists 10 towns and communities in the Effutu Municipal District.

Effutu is a municipal district on the coast of the Central Region of Ghana.
