    Geography<\/h2>\n

    The district sits in the northern half of the Central Region, well away from the sea. The land is gently rolling forest country cut by small streams, and much of it has been cleared for farms. The southern half drains toward the Ochi Nakwa; the north toward the Pra basin. Villages sit close together along the main roads, with scattered farm hamlets between them. Agona East<\/a> lies to the east and Ajumako\/Enyan\/Essiam<\/a> to the south-east; the Assin districts lie to the west and north.<\/p>\n

    Economy and Local Life<\/h2>\n

    Farming carries the district. Cocoa is the main cash crop, grown alongside oil palm, citrus, cassava, plantain and maize. Palm oil and palm kernel processing is common in the smaller villages, most of it done by hand. Breman Asikuma, Odoben and Brakwa each hold a market that draws traders from the surrounding farms, and Breman Asikuma also serves as the administrative and secondary-school centre for the three towns. Cocoa buying stations open in the villages during the main season from October, and lorries carry beans out to Swedru and Assin Fosu. Off-season work is mostly food farming, charcoal burning and petty trade.<\/p>\n

    Getting There<\/h2>\n

    Most traffic reaches the district from Agona Swedru, which links to the Accra\u2013Cape Coast highway. From Swedru a tarred road runs north-west through Nsaba country to Breman Asikuma, Odoben and Brakwa. Approaching from the west, drivers turn off at Assin Fosu on the Cape Coast\u2013Kumasi road. Trotros run between Swedru and Brakwa through the day, and feeder roads link the smaller villages; several become difficult after heavy rain.<\/p>\n
